What this snag list records

  • Project, property, inspection, and report identity.
  • Area, room, element, and a stable reference for each snag.
  • Observed condition and the clear result needed for acceptance.
  • Responsible trade or party, priority, target date, and current status.
  • Supporting photos and notes, kept with the relevant record.

How to run a snagging inspection

  1. 1

    Divide the property

Plan zones by building, level, room, exterior elevation, or discipline and mark each zone complete.

  2. 2

    Inspect consistently

In rooms, move from ceiling to floor and then around walls, openings, fixtures, finishes, and services.

  3. 3

    Write a locatable snag

State the room and element, what is observed, and what acceptable completion looks like.

  4. 4

    Assign and date it

Choose the responsible party and a realistic target date based on impact and sequence.

  5. 5

    Issue and reinspect

Export the report, let the assignee mark work ready, and have the authorized reviewer verify closure.

Sample room-by-room checks

  • Doors and windows: alignment, operation, locks, closers, seals, glazing, finish, and labels.
  • Walls and ceilings: damage, joints, paint coverage, penetrations, cleanliness, and alignment.
  • Floors and joinery: scratches, chips, lipping, movement, seals, hardware, fit, and finish.
  • Kitchens and bathrooms: fixtures, drainage, water flow, sealant, appliances, ventilation, and leaks.
  • Services: covers, labels, controls, outlets, grilles, testing status, and access for maintenance.

Example snag description

Apartment 3.07, kitchen, base cabinet below sink: right-hand hinge is loose and the door drops approximately 6 mm, causing it to rub the adjacent panel. Adjust and secure hardware so the door aligns with adjacent fronts and opens without contact.

The item describes the current state and gives the reviewer a visible closure test. It does not guess who caused the condition or prescribe a repair beyond what is necessary for the required outcome.

Punch list or snag list?

The template data is the same. Use “snag list” where that term is familiar and “punch list” for a North American audience. For an international project, title the report “Punch / Snag List” and define the closure process on the first page.

Plain answers

Frequently asked questions

What is a snag list?

A snag list is a structured record of incomplete, damaged, or nonconforming work that needs correction and verification, usually near construction completion or property handover.

Who should carry out snagging?

Contractors should inspect their own work before offering it for review. Depending on the project, the formal review may be performed by a consultant, contract administrator, owner, buyer, or qualified specialist.

Can I use this template for a new home?

Yes, as an organizational tool. Check local rules, contract procedures, warranty notices, inspection scope, and whether specialist evaluation is needed.

Does FieldCheck store my snag list online?

The initial version autosaves locally in your current browser. Export JSON or CSV backups and a PDF record; do not rely on local browser storage as your only long-term copy.
